HCC receives donation to establish Brooke’s House Career Opportunity Scholarship
The Hagerstown Community College Foundation recently received an endowment for the Brooke’s House Career Opportunity Scholarship.
The scholarship, donated by Katharine and Kent Oliver, will support educational opportunities for residents of Brooke’s House, a nonprofit organization located in Hagerstown, that provides treatment and recovery services to help residents achieve their dreams of living drug-free, productive lives.
“I think it is the first of its kind to come along, and I am glad that we are a part of helping these students,” said HCC President Jim Klauber.
The Brooke’s House Career Opportunity Scholarship will assist Brooke’s House residents in completing a degree or certificate program. The scholarship eligibility criteria requires full- or part-time enrollment and a GPA of 2.0 or greater. Selections for the scholarship will be made by Kevin Simmers, executive director of the organization.
Katharine and Kent Oliver endowed the scholarship with the HCC Foundation to support women in recovery as they pursue the knowledge and skills needed for success in today’s workplaces. The Olivers also hope to increase awareness of the importance of nonprofit partnerships in the local community.
“Our aim is to encourage others to consider a similar endowment. Education, especially education directed towards career preparation, helps women who are served by Brooke’s House keep on the pathway to sobriety,” said Mrs. Oliver.
The scholarship will award its first recipient in the fall 2024 semester. To learn more about the scholarship, or to inquire how to establish a similar endowment, contact the HCC College Advancement Office at 240-500-2348, or visit www.hagerstowncc.edu/hcc-foundation.
