Paramedic Courses (Washington County DES Closed Program)

The Paramedic Certificate program prepares students to sit for the National Registry Paramedic (NRP) licensure exam, which is currently required for practice in most states, including Maryland. This is a selective admission program intended to serve EMS providers affiliated with Washington County EMS. This is a closed program operated in partnership with Washington County Department of Emergency Services and is not open for registration.

NRPs provide emergency medical treatment at the scene of an accident or illness and transport sick and injured persons to medical facilities. They also analyze and take command of patient care with full responsibility for the patient until relieved by proper medical staff. NRPs work with Fire and EMS employees, but their role does not involve full supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Model professional behaviors complimentary to the profession through sound ethical decision making.
  • Respond as a team leader in emergency situations.
  • Formulate the proper assessment-based treatment plan for a medical or trauma patient.

“To prepare Paramedics who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.”
