Turkey Trot” food collection donated to HCC food pantry

Hagerstown Community College’s athletics department donated almost a thousand pounds of non-perishable food items, collected at the 23rd annual “Turkey Trot” 5K run/walk, to the HCC Helping Hands Student Food Pantry yesterday.

According to a 2020 survey by the U.S. Education Department’s National Center for Education Statistics, 23 percent of college undergraduates nationwide report food insecurity.

HCC’s Helping Hands Student Food Pantry is located in the Student Center and available to all current students, regardless of income. The pantry is stocked with non-perishable food, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and baby supplies. A storeroom is available for students to stock up on non-perishable grocery essentials.

The “Turkey Trot” took place on Thanksgiving Day, November 23. For every food item donated to the food drive, participants were entered into a prize drawing of their choice. The outreach by the athletics department, specifically baseball coach Scott Jennings and the baseball team, for the food collection resulted in many quality items for HCC students to access.
