HCC to host Martin Luther King Jr. celebration week
Hagerstown Community College will host a week of activities to honor Martin Luther King Jr., January 16 to 19. The theme for the week is “It Starts with Me: Shifting the Cultural Climate through Nonviolence.”
HCC is closed in observance of the federal holiday on Monday, January 15; however, faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to participate in the MLK Day of Learning to be held in Chambersburg, Pa., from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public. To learn more, visit www.racialreconciliationfc.org/mlkday.
The following “Lunch and Learn” sessions will be held in the AC&T Student Center at HCC throughout the week:
- On Tuesday, January 16, at 1 p.m., a panel of graphic design students will share their posters designed to reflect Dr. King’s six principles of nonviolence.
- On Wednesday, January 17, at 11:30 a.m., Rev. Don R. Stevenson, retired minister and current HCC adjunct instructor, will share his experience as a college student involved in the Civil Rights movement, while providing an overview of the six principles of nonviolence.
- On Thursday, January 18, at 12 noon, a TEDTalk by Verna Myers entitled, “How to Overcome our Biases? Walk Boldly Toward Them,” will be used to open dialogue about unconscious bias.
A Community Peace Walk will be held on campus on Thursday, January 18, at 2:30 p.m., beginning at the Student Center. Attendees are encouraged to take an active role in keeping Dr. King’s message of nonviolence alive by participating in a one-mile walk around campus. Dr. Rev. Darin Mency will conclude the Peace Walk with a live re-enactment of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, an HCC tradition.
