HCC to extend spring break another week

(March 12, 2020) – Officials at Hagerstown Community College continue to monitor the ever-evolving situation with the coronavirus (COVID-19). Working in close coordination with state and local partners, including the Governor’s Office, Maryland Higher Education Commission, and local agencies, the following actions are being taken at this time:

• HCC will extend spring break for STUDENTS ONLY for the week of March 16 to 20. No academic instruction will occur during that time. This includes credit and non-credit offerings.
• All HCC offices will remain open, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Offices will be operating during these hours for any students who need to access college services during this time. (Student Advising, Testing Center, Learning Support Center, HCC Library, etc.)
• All faculty and staff are expected to report to work, practicing social distancing and preventative hygiene measures. Facility personnel may be assigned to work alternate hours as directed by their supervisors.
• The ARCC will be closed to the public. All performances and practices in the Kepler Center are canceled, until further notice.
• Faculty and staff will spend the week of March 16 to 20 on campus, preparing for alternative teaching methods, should the situation warrant the need for that in the coming weeks.
• Employees who have been traveling during spring break to Washington, California, New York, out of the country, or other areas of concern, since February 27, should contact Jennifer Childs in Human Resources at jachilds@hagerstowncc.edu. 
• Students who have been traveling to these areas should consider self-quarantining during the next week.

HCC President Jim Klauber said in an email to faculty and staff, “It is important to remember that we do not need to overreact, but rather take measured responses to everything we do. MHEC stressed three key points today. First, we need to maintain vital services to our students. Second, we need to adjust to local conditions, and I believe that includes good environmental scanning of what is going on around our county and region. Finally, we need to maintain a sense of normalcy. I do not like having to cancel all the wonderful things going on at the College, however, we must be mindful of the situation in our region, state, and nation, and these measures are warranted at this time.”
