The Hagerstown Community College Board of Trustees authorized administration to move forward with plans to create a memorial tribute area on campus to honor the memory and contributions of former trustee Margaret E. Hetzer, and posthumously acknowledge her with emeritus status.
“Maggie’s compassion for students and passion for education as a driving force to improve lives was deeply felt by staff, faculty, students, and the board,” said HCC President Guy Altieri. “We think the creation of a tribute area will be a very fitting way to preserve her legacy.”
Hetzer served on the HCC Board of Trustees from July 2001 through February 2012. For most of that period, she served as a trustee liaison to the HCC Foundation.
“She was always highly regarded by her fellow trustees and members of the college community for her quiet deliberation and insight, and unwavering focus on the best interests of the college,” said Carolyn Brooks, trustee and former board chair.
In addition to personally supporting HCC’s numerous fundraising campaigns, Hetzer tirelessly solicited community support, exceling most notably in the sale of Ben Jones Art Show raffle tickets, accounting for nearly 50 percent of sales since 2004.
Hetzer died in October 2012. Construction will begin on the tribute area in the spring.
