Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education will offer two genealogy courses during the fall 2008 semester.
The first course, “Tracing Your Family Roots—Introduction to Genealogy,” is offered on Fridays, from Oct. 3 through Oct. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon, at HCC’s Valley Mall Center. This introductory course will cover the basic skills needed to research a family tree. Students will learn where to find source documents and will also have access to reference tools such as Family Tree Maker and Legacy Family Tree, as well as direct access to genealogy Web sites such as Ancestry.com, Heritage Quest, Family Search, footnote, GenealogyBank and WorldVitalRecords.
The second course, “Genealogy Plus,” is offered on Fridays, from Oct. 3 through Oct. 24, from 1:30 to 4 p.m., at HCC’s Valley Mall Center. Taught by HCC instructor Dorothy Reed, this course will guide students through new and innovative computer-generated research techniques using Family Tree Maker and Legacy Family Tree software and affiliated Web sites. A hands-on computer class, this course is specially designed for those who are interested in researching family history and would like to explore additional resources.
