Coach Semler has been involeved in playing and coaching basketball for 50 years. Bernie played high school basketball at Boonsboro High School in the 1960's and after graduation from high school, he made a career in the United States Air Force, serving 22 years. While on active duty, Bernie played on the Wright Patterson AFB basketball team for several years and was selected to two All Tournament Logistics Command teams which participated in two Air Force World-Wide tournaments. Bernie's coaching career also began while on active duty as the head coach of the Hanscom Air Force Base team. During his last ten years of active service, Bernie coached serveral military youth league and squadron basketball programs. In 1990, Bernie began coaching at the high school level and in 1994 was selected to head the Boonsboro High School varsity girls program. In 2005, Bernie began his coaching stint at Hagerstown Community College as an assistant coach under Dr. Marlys Palmer and currently under Coach Vicky Bullett. At Hagerstown Community College, Bernie has assisted in coaching the program to a 144-63 record. Bernie is married to Elaine and has four children.
