HCC’s Leadership Club attends annual leadership symposium
Submitted by Leigh-Anne Mauk on Thu, 03/31/2011 - 9:41am
Students in the Leadership Club at Hagerstown Community College recently attended the Sixth Annual Student Leadership Symposium at George Washington University. The symposium is intended to bring together student leaders from public and private colleges, universities, high schools, and the military in order to explore topics that are related to being effective community leaders. This year’s symposium, “Catalyst for Change: The Melting Pot of Leadership” focused on techniques needed to be successful leaders in today’s multi-cultural society.
“The symposium provided a great opportunity for student leaders from Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. to come together and learn from one another,” said Bonnie Saunders, coordinator, internships and job services and advisor for the HCC Leadership Club. “Students were able to hear from experts about topics such as leadership development, theory, diversity, and inclusion.”
Five students attended the one-day event. Attendees included Tim Barger, a mechanical engineering technology major specializing in computer-aided design (CAD) from Boonsboro; Amanda England, a graphic design and Web design major from Hagerstown; Brandon Gates, a business major from Rouzerville, Pa.; Maria Vera, a psychology major from Hagerstown; and Jonathan Volz, a history education major from Hagerstown.
The HCC Leadership Club was formed in spring 2011 to teach students how to become effective leaders and enhance their career skills for the workplace. Students who participate in the club are eligible to receive a leadership certificate issued by the Maryland Community College Activities Directors Association.
