Scholarship geared towards single moms

Female students at Hagerstown Community College are eligible to apply for the Women’s Opportunity Award through Soroptimist International of Hagerstown if they have children and can claim head of the household on their tax returns.

Soroptimist International is an organization for business and professional women to work together to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities around the world. The Women’s Opportunity Award is a $1,000 cash award that is meant to assist women in obtaining the education and skills they need to improve their employment status. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a woman with primary financial responsibility for yourself and your dependents
  • Be attending an undergraduate degree program or a vocational/skills training program
  • Be able to demonstrate financial need

Recipients may use the award for any expenses related to their educational pursuit.

Applications can be picked up at the Student Financial Aid Office, which is located in the Administration and Student Affairs (ASA) Building, on HCC’s main campus. In order to allow time for processing, HCC students should pick up their applications no later than 4 p.m. on Wed., Dec. 8.

Applications are due to Soroptimist International of Hagerstown by Dec. 15, 2010. Completed applications can be mailed to:

All applications must be sent directly to Soroptimist International. Applications sent to HCC will not be forwarded.
