HCC hosts 3rd Annual Guitar Mini-Fest April 3

Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education will host its third annual Guitar Mini-Fest on Sat., April 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in The Merle S. Elliott Continuing Education and Conference Center at HCC.
The HCC Guitar Mini-Fest will feature a host of musical workshops by several outstanding musicians including John S. Arnold and Tobias Hurwitz. HCC instructor Candice Mowbray will host the event.
John S. Arnold is an accomplished classical and steel string fingerstyle guitarist. He is a recording artist and published arranger and is well-known for his work as a chamber and solo musician. He is the founder and director of the annual Bethlehem Guitar Festival and teaches guitar at Moravian College.
Tobias Hurwitz has been avidly playing rock guitar since 1977. Each summer, he works for the National Guitar Workshop and has been widely published in a variety of guitar magazines including Guitar Player, Guitar One, and Guitar. Hurwitz is deeply involved in the Zen Guitar movement, and has authored many books for The National Guitar Workshop and Alfred Publications. HCC instructor Candice Mowbray earned a master’s degree in classical guitar performance from Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia and is currently pursuing a doctorate in musical arts. She performs 50 to 70 recitals, concerts, and private engagements each year and was named one of the “Top 5 People To Watch” by Hagerstown Magazine in 2007. The schedule of events is as follows:
8:30-9 a.m. – Participant Check-In
9 - 10 a.m. – Fretboard Harmony Workshop: Candice Mowbray will lead participants through warm-ups as students learn to apply music theory to fretboard, learn to play many root position triads, and learn how to layer chord voicings.
10 - 11 a.m. – Lead Rock Guitar Workshop: Tobias Hurwitz teaches discusses and demonstrates technical and artistic concepts used in constructing rock guitar solos.
11 a.m. – 12 noon – Exploring DADGAD: John S. Arnold will discuss the topics of cross string scales, drones, fingerstyle patterns, harmonics, composition, and more using DADGAD tuning.
12 noon – 12:30 p.m. – Meet the Artists and CD signing.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own guitars, pencils, and folding music stands. Availability is limited to 40 participants only. Cost is $50. For more information, call 301-790-2800, ext. 236.
