Female students in high school who plan to attend Hagerstown Community College in 2010 or are currently students at HCC are eligible to apply for the American Association of University Women (AAUW) scholarship.
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- The applicant must be a female resident of Washington County, Md., and be in definite need of financial assistance. A suggested guideline for a family of four would be an approximate income of $60,000 or less.
- The applicant must have maintained a 3.25 GPA in high school (or its equivalent in an AP course) or a 3.0 GOA the previous year in college. A transcript must be included to substantiate the GPA. If graduation from high school occurred more than five years ago, recent college test scores are acceptable substitutes.
- If the applicant is an independent student, a copy of the applicant's most recent federal income tax return must be submitted. If the applicant is a dependent student (claimed on a parent or guardian's tax return), a copy of the parent's most recent income tax must be provided. If the tax return is not completed in time, other proof of income will be considered.
- A letter of recommendation is required from an adult who can attest to leadership qualities, citizenship standards, financial need, and other pertinent information. Persons giving reference can include a teacher, guidance counselor, school administrator, work or volunteer supervisor, or clergy.
- A personal letter written by the applicant is required stating financial need, college/university choice, and vocational plans. Include reasons for pursuing higher education endeavors as well as plans to utilize your education to assist the community.
- A copy of the letter of acceptance from the chosen college is required.
Students can pick up an application in the Student Financial Aid Office in the Administration and Student Affairs (ASA) Building. Contact HCC Student Financial Aid Counselor Britney Carter at 301-790-2800, ext. 605, or via e-mail at blcarter@hagerstowncc.edu for more information.
Application deadline is March 4, 2010. Applications can be mailed to Diane Sanford at 826 The Terrace Hagerstown, MD 21742 and must be received by the March 4 deadline.
