HCC offers dementia care seminar

Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education is offering a seminar on “Providing Dementia Care: Enhancing Outcomes,” on Fri., June 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Kepler Theater on HCC’s main campus.
     
Check-in begins at 8 a.m. followed immediately by a continental breakfast. A series of sessions and workshops will follow, including: “Myths and Truths about Dementia,” with Marsden H. McGuire, MD, Sheppard Pratt Health System, at 8:30 a.m.; “Promising Discoveries,” with McGuire, at 9:30 a.m.; “Setting Appropriate Expectations of Abilities Throughout the Dementing Process,” with B.J. Gallagher, PhD, CCC-SLP, assistive technology specialist, at 10:45 p.m.; “Social Environments of People with Dementia In Long-Term Care,” with Kathryn De Mederios, PhD, The Copper Ridge Institute, at 12:45 p.m.; “Developing Interventions that Benefit the Caregiver and the Individual with Dementia,” with Kim Burton, Mental Health Association of Maryland, at1:45 p.m.; and “Navigating Your Way,” with Burton, at 3 p.m.
     
Professional continuing education credits are available for nurses, nurse practitioners, nursing home administrators, social workers, psychologists, counselors, activities personnel, CNA/GNAs, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and hearing/speech professionals. This is a collaborative program with Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research Program (GGEAR); University of Maryland Baltimore; Western Maryland AHEC; Alzheimer’s Association Greater Maryland Chapter, Western Maryland Region; and Hagerstown Community College.
     
Cost is $59 for health care professionals and $25 for family care givers. Fee includes continental breakfast, continuing education credits (CEUs), handout materials, and a certificate of attendance. Participants are asked to provide their own lunches. On-campus dining is available.
