HCC offers seminar on safeguarding the elderly

Hagerstown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education will offer a seminar entitled, “Elder Abuse: Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults,” on Friday, April 17, in HCC’s Kepler Theater.
     
The seminar begins at 8:30 a.m. and will last until 4 p.m. Discussion topics include signs and symptoms of elder abuse and neglect, the different types of elder abuse, financial exploitation, risk factors, investigative interviewing, and the mental health ramifications of abuse. In addition, information will be made available to help healthcare providers and care gives determine a course of action when abuse is uncovered or suspected.
     
Professional continuing education credits are available for nurses, nurse practitioners, nursing home administrators, activities personnel, certified nursing assistants, geriatric nursing assistants, social workers, psychologists, counselors, therapists, and hearing/speech professionals.
     
Seminar fee is $59 and includes a continental breakfast, continuing education credits, handout materials, and a certificate of attendance. This seminar is offered in collaboration with the Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research (GGEAR) Program at the University of Maryland Baltimore and Western Maryland AHEC.
