HCC to offer portraiture class
Submitted by Leigh-Anne Mauk on Fri, 03/20/2009 - 10:04am
Hagerstown Community College will offer a portraiture class on Mondays and Thursdays from May 11 through July 2 (1-4:35 p.m.). The three-credit course is designed for those with basic drawing and painting skills and a desire to gain a solid understanding of portraiture.
The course will consist of a combination of PowerPoint presentations of master works, studio exercises working from the model, critiques of class work and weekly home assignments. Charcoal is recommended for the first two weeks, after which students will be free to work in other media including oils, acrylics, pastels, or charcoal.
The instructor is Janet Siegmann Salter, who has taught at McDaniel College’s Common Ground on the Hill since 2003 leading workshops in portraiture, still life, painting and drawing. For three years, she led the Hagerstown Wednesday Portrait Group for 25 area artists. Her portrait, “Miss Virginia,” won honorable mention for the Popular Prize Award from the 76th Cumberland Valley Art Show in 2008. Enrollment is limited to 15.
