HCC to hold 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration
Submitted by Leigh-Anne Mauk on Wed, 01/11/2006 - 12:00am
Hagerstown Community College and the Herald-Mail Company will sponsor the third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 16, at 10 a.m. in the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center at HCC. The theme of this year’s program is “The Legacy Continues: Honoring Rosa Parks and Ruth Monroe.”
Rosa Parks, who died in October 2005, fueled the civil rights movement almost 50 years ago, when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man on a city bus in Montgomery, Ala.
Ruth Monroe was a local hero to many, including the young children she influenced during her 20 years as director of the Memorial Recreation Center. She also died in October 2005.
Students, staff and faculty are involved in planning this event, which is free and open to the public. The celebration will begin with activities for elementary, middle and high school students, followed by a tribute to Parks and Monroe, and a dramatic rendition of Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech by the Reverend Darin Mency of Ekklesia Ministry. The event will also include musical selections, Black Achievers presentations and a luncheon.
