HCC’s Thornhill receives top PTK advisor award

Hagerstown Community College Associate Professor Loretta Thornhill recently received the Robert Giles Distinguished Advisor Award for her work as advisor of HCC’s Pi Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges. This international recognition is the highest award an advisor can receive from PTK.
Thornhill was chosen as one of the top 30 PTK advisors from a group of more than 6,000 worldwide. She has served as HCC’s PTK advisor for eight years, far surpassing the average of three years.
“Advising Phi Theta Kappa is a great deal of work, but the rewards far outweigh the challenges,” Thornhill said. “I get to work with fantastic students and the society promotes very worthwhile service and study topics. The award is simply the icing on the cake for me.”
“We are extremely proud of Loretta and the fine work she has done and continues to do in working with our honor students,” said HCC President Guy Altieri. “Because of Loretta’s dedication, HCC’s PTK chapter has benefited numerous charitable organizations and helped countless individuals in need, both at home and around the world.”
Selection criteria for this award included involvement in chapter activities on local, regional and international levels; contribution to the growth experience of individual members; and support for the chapter role on campus.
Phi Theta Kappa has recognized academic excellence in two-year colleges since 1918. The society is comprised of more than 1,200 chapters at community, technical and junior colleges in the U.S., Canada and Germany, making it the most prestigious honor society serving two-year colleges. Membership is based primarily upon academic achievement.
