Maintenance Technician, Level I, Groundskeeper

The Maintenance Technician, Level I, Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the conditions and appearance of the grounds of the campus.  Responsibility is also assigned for the purchase and replacement of plants, materials, and equipment needed for the upkeep of the grounds.  This position will maintain the condition and appearance of the lawns, gardens, sidewalks and roadways and playing fields.  The Maintenance Technician, Groundskeeper will run mowing equipment, keep grounds clear of trash, trim and prune trees and shrubs, remove leaves, keep roads and sidewalks clear of trash, leaves and debris.  This position will perform basic maintenance on grounds equipment.  This position assists with snow and ice removal.  The Maintenance Technician, Level I, Groundskeeper may organize and lead student employees and volunteers, and will take the lead in various grounds keeping tasks with other facility employees such as grass mowing and snow removal. This position will participate in the annual organization and implementation of two "Campus Pride Days" with HCC staff and HCC volunteers.  This position involves a some amount of independent work, as well as working under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.  A key component of this position is the dual responsibility to both Maintenance and Grounds keeping.  During days of inclement weather and during winter months, the Maintenance Technician, Level I, Groundskeeper will be assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor to perform regular routine maintenance tasks.

Qualifications: 
Education and experience - High school diploma supplemented by specialized training in landscaping and 3-5 years of increasingly responsible experience maintaining grounds and outdoor facilities which demonstrates the required grounds keeping knowledge, skills, and abilities; advanced training in landscaping or horticulture preferred; knowledge of trees, shrubs, flowers and planting and growing techniques suitable for this area; knowledge of methods and techniques of grounds keeping and landscaping; experience in the operation and routine servicing of lawn equipment, fountains, pumps, irrigation systems, basic plumbing and electrical, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is also highly desirable; ability to read, write, and follow instructions; knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety procedures; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Skills and abilities - Read, understand, and follow policies and procedures; follow oral and written directions; read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and sketches; safely and effectively operate tools and equipment used in the maintenance of buildings and grounds; communicate clearly and consicely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; know and apply safety codes and regulations; keep simple records and reports and work from oral and written directions; lift 20-30 pounds without assistance and heavy items with assistance; may sometimes be required to perform strenuous manual tasks for long periods of time; work independently in the absense of detailed instructions when necessary and work under direct supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor when required. Additional requirements - Valid motor vehicle operator's license required; Class B motor vehicle licese is preferred; possess, or be willing to acquire, valid and applicable licenses and permits for application of lawn and garden herbicides and pesticides; and occasional day travel to local gardens or other colleges or institutions may be required.
